HUMANISTIC TRANSFORMATION - Third International Erich Fromm Research Conference 2023 from June 8th - June 11th 2023 at the IPU. The Erich Fromm Research Conference aims at bringing together international researchers engaged with the work of Erich Fromm, examining the actuality of Fromm’s social-analytical approach, as well as exploring the potential for further development of this approach with regard to contemporary social developments. In this year, the contributions of about 45 speakers will focus on different aspects of a “Humanistic Transformation”.
Prof. Dr. Hartmut Rosa will open the Research Conference on Thursday evening, June 8, with an opening lecture entitled “From Affirmation and Responsibility to Transformation and Respons‐a‐bility: Resonance as a Relational Mode of Being”. The lecture will explore the difference between two different modes of social encounter - “echo” and “resonance”- and discuss the social implications of the “resonance” mode of existence.

Humanistic Transformation and the Ego-Oriented Social Character
The most important source for Erich Fromm's theory of a humanistic transformation is undoubtedly his 1955 book The Sane Society, in which Fromm puts a whole series of theories and strategies of transformation to the test (see Fromm 1955a, pp. 270 ff.). Fromm sees their failure primarily in the fact that how the different “socio-economic, spiritual, and psychological explanations are interrelated, and how they in-teract” (Ibid., p. 271) is not recognized.
