Erich-Fromm-Lecture 2024 with Michael Thompson on December 4, 2024

The Erich Fromm Study Center organizes an annual Erich Fromm Lecture at the IPU Berlin. This year, Prof. Dr. Michael Thompson, Professor of Political Theory at William Paterson University (USA), could be won as a speaker.

"Erich Fromm and the Revival of Radical Psychoanalysis"

In this lecture, Erich Fromm's theories of psyche and society will be explored as a potential foundation for reviving a radical form of psychoanalysis. This approach aims to cultivate a consciousness of freedom by emphasizing (1) emancipation from both internalized and external authoritarian forms of relatedness, and (2) the development of self-awareness as a purposive, active, and self-determining agent in the world. Fromm's ideas will be discussed in contrast to those of Marcuse and other theorists whose psychoanalytic theories have been coopted by the neoliberal transformation of modernity. The lecture will conclude by outlining the goals of a radical psychoanalysis inspired by Fromm’s framework.
