Erich Fromm Lecture 2024 | Interview with Prof. Dr. Michael Thompson
Erich Fromm and the Revival of Radical Psychoanalysis
Prof. Dr. Thomas Kühn and Dr. Rainer Funk in conversation with Prof. Dr. Michael Thompson
In this lecture, Erich Fromm's theories of psyche and society will be explored as a potential foundation for reviving a radical form of psychoanalysis. This approach aims to cultivate a consciousness of freedom by emphasizing (1) emancipation from both internalized and external authoritarian forms of relatedness, and (2) the development of self-awareness as a purposive, active, and self-determining agent in the world. Fromm's ideas will be discussed in contrast to those of Marcuse and other theorists whose psychoanalytic theories have been coopted by the neoliberal transformation of modernity. The lecture will conclude by outlining the goals of a radical psychoanalysis inspired by Fromm’s framework.
